The Search Continues

Written by Mike on October 18, 2007 – 4:44 am -

The Cardinals are still looking for a general manager, even with interim John Mozeliak waiting in the wings, and calling the shots. The Post Dispatch is reporting that the timetable for finding a suitable replacement to Walt Jocketty has been extended. Originally projected to last 2 to 3 weeks, the decision now might not come until November 6, when the general manager’s meetings begin in Orlando. While the front office continues to hold interviews, the status of manager Tony La Russa remains unclear. He has said that he isn’t ready to commit, without first having a GM in place. Dewitt has, however, been keeping La Russa informed on a daily basis.

“I think the key is for Tony to make sure he’s 100 percent sure he’s coming back,” DeWitt said. “I think the contract, if that’s the case, will take care of itself.”

Bernie Miklasz is almost certain of a La Russa return, and says that Tony has approved the moves that Mozeliak has made so far. He also gives a good explanation as to why the Pineiro signing was justified. Read Bernie’s story here.

That’s just nuts, really. There’s a lot of legwork to be done between the end of the Series and the GM meetings, and if we are going to bring in someone new, they need to be on the job.

The longer the timetable, the more likely Mozeliak gets the job.

I couldn’t agree more. They can’t afford to sit on their hands much longer. I think they should just give it to Mo, give Tony a new contract, and get back to business.

I’m glad Dewitt is concerned about Tony coming back, but everyone knows that La Russa is waiting for a GM to be named. SO don’t you think he should be concerned with filling that spot, and then Tony will come off the fence?!
Why are we waiting a week after the World Series is over to start working? Typical uneasy off season for Cards fans! Just once, I would like to relax, and trust upper management to get the job done. I’m not short to forget last season, or the past three seasons, however, ‘04 seemed to be the only recent year where we had a healthy staff(exception Carp) that didn’t consist of back up players, almost ready minor leaguers, and the DFA’s!!!

It appears the Cards are not particularly keen on giving the job to Mozeliak. With the mention of other interviews and maybe waiting for awhile it seems a truly “new direction” is their intent.
